சங்க காலத்தில் இப்பகுதியை நன்னன் என்ற மன்னன் ஆட்சி செய்து வந்தான். அவனது அரசுத் தோட்டத்தில் இருந்த மாமரத்தின் பழங்களை யாரும் உண்ணக்கூடாது என்பது கடும் உத்தரவு. ஒருமுறை ஆற்றில் மிதந்து வந்த மாங்கனியை ஒரு இளம்பெண் அறியாமல் உண்டுவிட்டாள். இதற்காக மன்னன் அவளுக்கு மரண தண்டனை விதித்தான். அவளது தந்தை எடையளவு தங்கம் மற்றும் யானைகளைத் தண்டமாகத் தர முன்வந்தும் மன்னன் ஏற்கவில்லை. அந்த இளம்பெண் கொல்லப்பட்ட பின், அவளை அடக்கம் செய்த மயானத்தில் (சயனித்த நிலையில்) அமைக்கப்பட்ட உருவமே மாசாணி என்று அழைக்கப்படுகிறது.

மற்றொரு புராணத்தின் படி, சீதையைத் தேடிச் சென்ற ஸ்ரீ ராமர், ஆனைமலை மயானத்தில் தங்கியிருந்தபோது, அங்கிருந்த களிமண்ணைக் கொண்டு அம்மன் உருவத்தை உருவாக்கி வழிபட்டதாகக் கூறப்படுகிறது. அதனாலேயே அம்மன் இங்கு சயன நிலையில் (படுத்துக்கொண்டு) காட்சி தருகிறார்.

During the Sangam era, this region was ruled by a king named Nannan. He had issued a strict decree that no one should consume the mangoes from his royal garden. One day, a young girl unknowingly ate a mango that had floated down the river from the garden. For this, the king sentenced her to death. Despite her father offering the girl’s weight in gold and eighty-one male elephants as a fine, the king refused to relent. After the girl was executed, an image was created in her memory at the graveyard (in a reclining posture), which over time came to be worshipped as Masani.

🏹 Connection to Ramayana

According to another legend, while Lord Rama was searching for Sita, he stayed at the Anaimalai graveyard. It is said that he created an idol of the Goddess using clay and worshipped her before proceeding to Sri Lanka. This is why the deity is seen in a reclining (lying down) posture here.
